Starting a seller account on Amazon is simple, however building a sustainable and profitable business on the platform isn’t as easy as most ‘Amazon gurus’ would like to make you believe. 

The average Amazon seller today is concerned about:

1). 3). Fierce competition from a market saturated with 3rd party merchants and even Amazon itself: 3rd party sellers on Amazon are responsible for a majority of the sales on the platform. Newer sellers have to compete with older sellers, who might have discounts or larger credit lines with suppliers or manufacturers that give them an advantage on pricing. Merchants based abroad may enjoy subsidies from their government and not be subject to local taxes or labour regulations.  Furthermore, they may be based closer to manufacturers giving them an edge in pricing over local competitors.

Amazon has extensive data on online retail consumer behaviour. It uses this intelligence to launch bestselling products under its AmazonBasics and Amazon Essentials brands at low prices.

It’s no secret that Amazon’s is fond of undercutting 3rd party sellers on its platform (sometimes even losing money in the process) to gain market share or new prime members.

Merchants with healthy accounts and the ability to beat Amazon’s prices may still lose out on sales to Amazon because Amazon can win the buybox even with up to 10-15% higher prices. The irony is that  Amazon still makes about 7-15% in revenue from every 3rd party sale on its platform and an additional $39.99 per merchant in monthly subscription fee.

4). Rise of direct to consumer models: The rise of direct to consumer models undercuts the middleperson (retailers). We have heard cases of brands prohibiting the sale of their products by 3rd party merchants on Amazon in order to be the sole distributor on the platform.
